Swedish Massage - Ladies only

Swedish massage therapy is the modality that comes to mind when most people think about massage. As the best-known type of bodywork performed today, one of the primary goals of the Swedish massage technique is to relax the entire body. This is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. But Swedish massage therapy goes beyond relaxation. Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension.

Deep tissue massage therapy is similar to Swedish massage, but the deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints)

Hot Stone Massage - Ladies only

Hot stone massage therapy melts away tension, eases muscle stiffness and increases circulation and metabolism. Each hot stone massage therapy session promotes deeper muscle relaxation through the placement of smooth, water-heated stones at key points on the body.

The premise behind hot stone massage therapy is that the direct heat of the stones relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist access to their deeper muscle layers. Combining hot stone protocols with a full body massage provides a very healing and effective experience. The hot stones also expand blood vessels, which encourages blood flow throughout the body. The hot stones have a sedative effect that can relieve chronic pain, reduce stress and promote deep relaxation.

Throughout the massage, the therapist will use several different warmed pieces of compressed bamboo to work the tension out of each muscle. Long fluid strokes in different styles like Swedish, deep tissue, lymphatic drainage, or neuromuscular therapy are used to stretch and compress the muscle and tissue

Ayurvedic Foot Massage

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical system, meaning ‘science of life ‘the art of harmonious healthy living. Ayurveda explains that human beings, like the universe, are made up of five elements: air, fire, water, earth and space and focuses on the maintenance of physical, emotional and spiritual balance.

The marmas (vital energy points) are an important part of Ayurvedic anatomy. As with reflexology, these points correspond to internal organs and systems of the body and are worked on in all Ayurvedic treatments. There are 107 marma points, which form vital energy channels running throughout the body; some of these points are located on the legs and feet.

Ayurvedic foot massage is carried out with the use of a small three-metal bowl (vatki) or a wand, comprising a bowl with a handle attached. The metals used are copper, zinc and tin, and this sacred metal alloy (kansa) is known in Ayurveda as the ‘healing metal’. It is thought that copper may help in reducing pain and inflammation, zinc in aiding the digestive and immune systems, and tin in improving digestion and reducing headaches and insomnia.

What to expect

The treatment begins by cleansing the feet and legs. This is followed by specific moves to release tension in the feet and legs. Then, slowly and methodically, the entire feet and lower legs (toes, feet, ankles, calves and knees) are encouraged to relax through the application of massage techniques carried out with the aid of oil.

The treatment incorporates special moves performed using the kansa bowl or wand.

Ayurvedic foot massage is a wonderfully relaxing holistic treatment that can help balance body, mind and spirit.

Before I can start massaging you I would require written confirmation from your midwife or doctor that it is safe for you to have a pregnancy massage.

I can send you the form through the post to give to your midwife at your

next appointment for them to fill in and then bring with you to your first massage

appointment.

A typical pregnancy massage will begin with a consultation (the first time you come) or an informal chat to see if anything has changed in your pregnancy since your last massage. Then you will lie/sit to receive your massage. After the massage you will be given time to relax and come back to your senses before you leave.
